Poncitlán: Industrial Growth and Its Impact on the Mexico-U.S. Binational Economy

Municipality of Poncitlan, Jalisco, Mexico

Poncitlán, a municipality in Jalisco with a rich history and tradition, has witnessed remarkable economic transformation in recent years. Under the leadership of Mayor Arturo Israel Ascencio Gómez, known as "El Profe," the municipality has experienced significant industrial growth, particularly in the chemical and food sectors. This development has not only impacted the local economy but has also generated interest in the binational economic relationship between Mexico and the United States.

According to the 2019 Economic Census, the chemical industry in Poncitlán accounted for 55.8% of the municipality's gross census value-added, with an increase of 77.6% between 2014 and 2019. Meanwhile, the food industry contributed 9.2% of the added value in 2019, growing by 16.3% over the same period. This industrial boom has positioned Poncitlán as a key player in the Ciénega region, excelling in chemical and food production.

In his third government report, Mayor Ascencio Gómez highlighted the investment of nearly 700 million pesos during his administration, aimed at creating opportunities and improving residents' quality of life. He emphasized the importance of responsible resource management and transparency in his administration.

Education and Social Development: Foundations for Progress

Education has been a priority for Ascencio Gómez's administration. Free internet access points have been installed in communities such as Santa Cruz el Grande, San Sebastián, Cuitzeo, and San Pedro Itzicán in collaboration with RED Jalisco.

Additionally, over 45 million pesos have been allocated for school improvements at all levels, benefiting localities like San Pedro Itzicán and the municipal seat. The distribution of more than 16,000 school supply kits through the "Backpacks with Supplies" program and the implementation of school transportation reflect the commitment to education.

The mayor has also emphasized the importance of programs like the Cultural Missions, which have positively impacted the municipality, with over 2,500 participants engaging in educational activities. These efforts aim not only to improve education but also to strengthen Poncitlán's social and cultural fabric.

Binational Relations: Investment and Opportunities

The economic relationship between Mexico and the United States has been crucial to the development of regions like Jalisco. Between January and September 2024, the U.S. was the main source of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Jalisco, contributing $481 million. Historically, from 1999 to September 2024, the U.S. has invested $19.987 billion in the state.

This investment flow has benefited municipalities like Poncitlán, where the chemical industry plays a leading role. U.S. companies have shown interest in the region, taking advantage of its skilled workforce and strategic location. This interest has created jobs and driven local economic growth, further strengthening binational ties.

Environmental Challenges: Balancing Development and Sustainability

Poncitlán's industrial growth has also brought challenges, particularly in environmental sustainability. The Ciénega region, where the municipality is located, is known for its manufacturing development, especially in the chemical industry. However, this sector has faced pollution-related challenges. Studies show that municipalities with a strong manufacturing presence, such as Poncitlán, have a high pollution potential, particularly in the chemical, petroleum derivatives, plastics, and rubber industries.

Mayor Ascencio Gómez has acknowledged these challenges and emphasized the need to implement public policies that promote sustainable development. The municipal administration is working with state and federal authorities to mitigate environmental impact and ensure that economic growth does not compromise the health and well-being of future generations.

Future Perspectives: Innovation and Competitiveness

Looking ahead, Poncitlán aims to diversify its economy and promote innovation. The municipal administration is focused on attracting investments in technology and service sectors to complement its strong industrial base. Additionally, workforce training programs are being implemented to prepare workers for the demands of a globalized economy.

Collaboration with educational institutions and the private sector is essential to driving research and development projects. These initiatives seek to enhance the municipality's competitiveness and position it as an innovation hub in the region.

Under Mayor Arturo Israel Ascencio Gómez's leadership, Poncitlán has achieved a balance between tradition and modernity. Industrial growth, particularly in the chemical and food sectors, has been remarkable, while public policies focused on education, social development, and environmental sustainability have been implemented. The binational relationship with the United States has been a key pillar in this development, bringing investments and opportunities that have benefited the community.

The challenge for Poncitlán lies in maintaining this growth trajectory while addressing environmental concerns and adapting to global economic trends. With a strategic vision and commitment to residents' well-being, the municipality is poised to become a model for regional development in Mexico.
