Sheinbaum Strikes Back! The 5 Key Moments from the January 8, 2025, Morning Conference

Conferencia matutina 8 de enero 2025

The January 8, 2025, morning conference led by President Claudia Sheinbaum was marked by strong responses to recent statements by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump and significant national announcements. Here are the five most important highlights:

1. Response to Trump: "Mexican America"

In reaction to Trump’s proposal to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the "Gulf of America," Sheinbaum suggested referring to the combined territory of Mexico and the United States as "Mexican America." She supported her proposal by displaying a 1607 map and referencing the Apatzingán Constitution, highlighting the term's historical legitimacy.

2. Defense of Mexican Sovereignty

Sheinbaum addressed Trump’s claims that Mexico is controlled by drug cartels, suggesting the president-elect may be misinformed, possibly believing that figures from the past like Felipe Calderón and Genaro García Luna are still in power. She firmly stated, "The people govern in Mexico."

3. Status of Mexicana de Aviación

Following TAR’s withdrawal of three aircraft from Mexicana de Aviación’s fleet, the president explained that this was a temporary reassessment while new aircraft are on the way. She assured that the state airline has a "long life" ahead and that measures are being taken to strengthen its operations.

4. Corruption Allegations at Infonavit

Sheinbaum announced that criminal complaints will be filed with the Attorney General’s Office regarding corruption detected at Infonavit. She instructed the director of the institute, Octavio Romero, to coordinate with legal counsel Ernestina Godoy to proceed legally and ensure institutional transparency.

5. Confidence in Bilateral Relations with the U.S.

Despite Trump’s recent statements, Sheinbaum expressed confidence in maintaining a respectful and collaborative relationship with the incoming U.S. administration. She recalled Trump’s good relationship with former President López Obrador and emphasized the importance of cooperation based on mutual respect without subordination.

These topics reflect President Sheinbaum’s firm stance on international challenges and her commitment to transparency and strengthening national institutions, crucial aspects of Mexico-U.S. bilateral relations.
